This book on Material Science offers a comprehensive understanding of the structure and properties of materials, tailored for engineering and applied science students. Beginning with crystallography, it explores crystal structures, defects, dislocations, and phase transformations that govern material behavior. The second unit covers electrical and magnetic properties, moving from classical to quantum models, and highlighting phenomena such as band theory, exchange interactions, and modern device applications like GMR. The third unit focuses on semiconductor physics, addressing intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, carrier transport, Hall effect, and device principles such as Schottky diodes and ohmic contacts. Optical properties of materials are presented in the fourth unit, with topics including absorption, recombination, optoelectronic devices, LEDs, laser diodes, and advanced optical phenomena like electro-optics and plasmonics. The final unit introduces nanoelectronic devices, covering quantum confinement, resonant tunneling, single-electron phenomena, photonic crystals, spintronics, and carbon nanotube applications. With its balance of theory and applications, the book connects fundamental science with cutting-edge technologies. It provides clear derivations, illustrative examples, and practical insights to support both classroom learning and independent study. This structured approach equips readers with the knowledge needed to analyze, design, and innovate in the rapidly evolving field of materials.
