Applied Hydraulics and Pneumatics is a comprehensive engineering textbook that presents the fundamental principles, components, design concepts, and practical applications of modern fluid power technology. The book provides a systematic understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, emphasizing the transmission, control, and conversion of energy through pressurized liquids and compressed gases. It explores the basic principles of fluid power, properties and selection of working fluids, Pascal’s law, fluid flow, friction losses, hydraulic power sources, and different types of hydraulic pumps. It further explains hydraulic actuators, cylinders, motors, directional control valves, flow control valves, pressure control valves, servo valves, proportional valves, and essential hydraulic accessories. The book offers detailed coverage of hydraulic circuits and systems, including accumulators, intensifiers, regenerative circuits, pump unloading circuits, sequence circuits, reciprocation circuits, synchronization circuits, fail-safe circuits, speed control circuits, hydrostatic transmission, and electrohydraulic systems. It also introduces pneumatic and electro-pneumatic technologies, covering air properties, gas laws, compressors, filters, regulators, lubricators, control valves, pneumatic actuators, and pneumatic circuit design. Important topics such as the cascade method, ladder diagrams, fluidics, and pneumatic logic circuits provide an understanding of automated industrial control systems. The book also highlights the installation, selection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and practical implementation of hydraulic and pneumatic components. Industrial applications involving drilling, planing, shaping, surface grinding, hydraulic presses, forklifts, CNC machine tools, pick-and-place mechanisms, tool handling, and low-cost automation are discussed to strengthen practical engineering knowledge. With its structured explanations and application-oriented coverage, this textbook serves as a valuable learning resource for undergraduate engineering students, diploma students, educators, technicians, and practicing engineers. It supports the development of essential skills in fluid power system design, component selection, circuit development, operational control, preventive maintenance, and industrial automation.
